Adobe Flash for Android Updated

Published on November 12, 2011 by in Nexus

Only two days after confirming rumors that it would cease development on Adobe Flash Player for mobile devices, Adobe has released Flash Player 11 for Android devices. Like the just-released updates for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Solaris, this version is meant to address “critical vulnerabilities” in earlier versions of Flash.

Practically every update to Flash these days seems to be about addressing “critical vulnerabilities” that can lead to security breaches and lost control of devices. Adobe has identified 12 vulnerabilities in the latest update, including several related to memory corruption and buffer overflow that lead to errors. The newer versions of Flash patches these security holes and provides “performance improvements,” and users are urged to download it from the Android Marketimmediately.

Today’s update is the sixth since August 2011. However, Android users may see that pace of updates slow now that Adobe has confirmed that it plans to stop developing Adobe Flash Player for mobile devices. Adobe confirmed on Wednesday that it will cease bringing new features and hardware optimization to Android devices, committing only to delivering critical updates like the one released today. It’s possible that some hardware manufacturers may continue to develop Flash on their own, as BlackBerry has promised to do with its Playbook tablet, but mobile Flash’s days are numbered.

For a detailed breakdown of which vulnerabilities Adobe Flash 11.1 addresses, read the security bulletin posted by Adobe. Click here for Android Market download link.
